Fieldwork with Bo, Peep and their lost sheep
Article Abstract:
Sociology professor Robert Balch attended a meeting held by the Heaven's Gate UFO cult leader Marshall Herff Applewhite in 1975 as part of his research into cult member behaviour. Balch and his student David Taylor become cult members for two months in order to record the cult's activities. Balch believes the cult members were volunteers, serious believers and not victims, although as part of the cult they had to be totally committed to the group and exclude the outside world. He cannot understand why the Heaven's Gate cult members committed suicide.

Hispanic hothouse in Vegas
Article Abstract:
Virtually everyone in the area around the Old West city of Las Vegas, NM, is or has been a student at New Mexico Highlands University or is related to one, but figures published in the local paper in Jul. 1998 show that just 5% of entering students obtain a degree within four years. Highlands has around 3,000 students, less than many city high schools, of whom 67% are Hispanic. Highlands accepts almost any student who completes high school but faces a challenge common to all Hispanic-serving institutions in the US, keeping them there.
