Final frontier requires pioneering solutions
Article Abstract:
The chief executive of the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council analyses UK and European science policy. It is pointed out that across Europe it is accepted that an innovation-driven, knowledge-based economy is the correct goal for policy and it is pointed out that during 2004, the European Commission will discuss and decide how it intends to develop such a policy. It is argued that the UK and its academic community needs to decide whether or not to cooperate with any changes that the European Commission comes up with.

UK may play smaller part in Europe's next research framework
Article Abstract:
Issues concerning the sixth framework programme and the European Research Area concept, which were launched by the European Union commissioner for research Philippe Busquin in order to meet the Lisbon European Council's agreement in March 2000 that Europe should become the world's most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy by 2010, are examined. It is argued that the UK will pay a smaller part in the sixth framework programme than in earlier programmes, with barriers such as cost limiting involvement.
