First brushes with the real world
Article Abstract:
Art and design students who graduated from London, England, colleges Goldsmith's, the Slade, the Royal College of Art and Chelsea in summer 1998 consider it natural that Charles Saatchi has chosen to fund bursaries for art students at those institutions rather than at provincial art schools. Slade sculpture graduate Adam Burge argues that the money would be wasted in provincial colleges because London has the best students. Chelsea textiles graduate Sophie Howard-Jones feels that the Saatchi bursary would be most useful if it provided money for the final-year show.

Conflict is dead, long live the capitalist
Article Abstract:
Historians tend to be pessimistic, and it is premature to argue that war has ended in Europe. The European Union aims to link the interests of Germany and France, previously in conflict. Elsewhere, other conflicts have emerged, as is the case in Kosovo. Cooperation has, however, become increasingly important in Europe. Land and empire have become less important. Population decline has not led to concerns about national virility. Nation states no longer appear to threaten peace.
