Foreign drive cuts UK places
Article Abstract:
Students in the UK face the prospect of increasingly tough competition for places to study degrees at elite academic institutions in England as universities look to increase private funds by enrolling more overseas and postgraduate students. University College London (UCL) is the latest institution to reveal plans to reduce its reliance on state funding by diversifying its student intake. Under the proposals, UCL intends to increase its proportion of postgraduate students to 50% by 2014, vs 37% at present, and increase its number of non-European Union students to over 25% from 21%.

London's federal future in question
Article Abstract:
The University of London's (UoL) future was seen to be hanging in the balance after Malcolm Grant, provost of University College London, the biggest and oldest constituent college of UoL, questioned UoL's continued existence. Grant's comments came in response to proposals by Sir Graeme Davis, vice-chancellor of UoL, to strengthen the university's position through possible expansion and intercollegiate teaching initiatives.
