A regius rumble
Article Abstract:
Quentin Skinner was recently appointed regius chair of modern history at Christ's College, Cambridge. Skinner replaces Patrick Collinson, who retires in September 1996. The regius chair position is not advertised, nor are interviews conducted. The individual is selected by the prime minister on behalf of the Queen, and is advised by a 'patronage secretary'. The regius chair appointment procedure is discussed, along with recent criticism.

A rebel with an endless cause
Article Abstract:
Noam Chomsky has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Cambridge university. Chomsky is an anti-establishment figure. He received the doctorate for his work on linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has just received an honorary degree from Amherst College for political activism.
