The scenic view
Article Abstract:
Old Dominion professor of the humanities at Columbia University, NY, Simon Schama was driven to abandon his intention of becoming a lawyer through reading Sir Percy Winfield's classic, 'On Tort.' Walpole's biographer J.H. Plumb provided a role model for Schama during his years at Cambridge University, England. Plumb, described by Schama as an outsider in that he had not been to public school, shared Schama's vision of history as literature and gave him a sense of belonging. Nevertheless, Schama did not feel altogether an insider after being elected into a college fellowship soon after graduating.
