Growth likely to wipe out cash gains
Article Abstract:
Funding for United Kingdom higher education will be increased in 1999, but there are still uncertainties over details and spending levels in following years. A cash increase of 5.7% will be eroded by inflation which could reach 3%, and student numbers are to be increased by some 3.5%. The government is increasing funds for sixth form colleges and further education by 8.2%, which is almost what was requested, and university research will receive an additional 1.4 billion pounds over three years.

How much has the landscape changed?
Article Abstract:
Lord Dearing produced a report on the future of higher education in the Unuted Kingdom which was published in 1997. Some of his proposals have been acted on, while others have been set aside or rejected. Funding recommendations have been a controversial issue, and it is established that students should help pay for the cost of their studies. The role of private sector companies is less clear. Meanwhile, the government is to make a statement on higher education and funding in fall 1998.
