Two sectors, one voice
Article Abstract:
Higher education in the UK is suffering because it is not speaking with a unified voice and defending itself against negative moves by the government. Universities have no control over the organizations responsible for A-levels, even though A-levels are the qualifying examination for university entry. Furthermore, there is no interaction between school teachers and university lecturers or between undergraduates and those who teach them. Universities are unable to agree among themselves, and there is also considerable lack of unity in the secondary education sector.

Save our science
Article Abstract:
It is clear that there are several ways in which science higher education should be reformed in the UK. The funding of basic science is shifting increasingly away from the public sector and towards the private sector. This is not necessarily a negative development, but it means that funding focuses on product-related subjects such as pharmacology. More attention must be given to identifying commercial opportunities in the work undertaken by university science departments, and there must be enhanced job security for young scientists.

Stop, look and listen
Article Abstract:
The Higher Education Council for England is calling on institutions to explain their learning and teaching strategies. There is a contrast between institutions in terms of whether they consult those who carry out teaching work, on what strategies should be adopted. Staff are more likely to be involved in creative ways if they have some control over the formation of strategies. There may be problems if insecurity if measures are believed to be adopted to cut costs or homogenize education.
