Hefce faces unsure future
Article Abstract:
The Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce), which, through the research assessment exercise (RAE), helps decide the allocation of funding to universities in England, will face a challenge to remain relevant in the future when the lifting of the cap on top-up fees will mean that Hefce's role as chief funder of higher education will be radically diminished. While many will be keen to say goodbye to Hefce and the RAE, others argue that it would be good for Hefce to remain in some form, even it is only to serve as a buffer between the education sector and the Department for Education and Skills.

Top-ups blamed for wane in demand
Article Abstract:
Applications for university places in England are down by around 5% on this time last year, an indicator that the introduction of top-up fees is deterring some students. Universities UK noted that it is aware that the figures indicate that top-up fees are having an effect, but argued that it is too soon for the figures to be of any real concern.
