The British Council has said that more academic jobs in the UK should go to overseas candidates to ensure that British universities can maintain their global reputation for excellence. More global competition for jobs is needed to help the UK keep pace with international competitors in research and teaching.

Personnel heads cool on rush for promotion

Hopes of better promotion prospects for academics as the new pay and grading structure is adopted are expected to be dashed, according to a poll by The Times Higher. Almost all university personnel managers taking part said they did not expect academics to be promoted.
