Hollywood lavas
Article Abstract:
The producers of the volcano dramas 'Volcano' and 'Dante's Peak' both employed expert volcanologists to help with research, but while 'Dante's Peak' is an accurate portrayal of a possible volcanic eruption in the Cascades range, the same cannot be said of 'Volcano.' Professor of geology Rick Hazlett enjoyed working on 'Volcano' but admits that the film company was highly selective in the material it chose to use. Hazlett explains that his memory of lava bombs is of globs of hot lava a few feet across, trailing smoke, not of glowing fireballs that explode on impact as shown in the film.

Engage with the world
Article Abstract:
US Philosopher Richard Rorty suggests it is important for universities, in the US, to retain their role as arenas of social protest. He feels the world economic crisis may cause the reemergence of the right because there is little credible left wing support in the US. Rorty has a number of books due to be published in the US and Europe. He is latest book 'Rorty and his Critics' has been written to challenge analytic philosophers. He also plans to respond personally to many other critics of his work. Rorty intends to teach for five years, at Standford University, before his retirement.
