How bricks can build confidence
Article Abstract:
The head of the Unit for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching at the University of Kent describes her experiences with a summer school project set up at Kent to help first-year undergraduates who are at risk of failing or who are underachieving. The project was established two years ago with funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England and in its first year 40 students took part, of which only one left higher education. In the scheme's second year 120 people applied for 90 places and only two dropped out and this year 182 people have applied for 120 places.

...believe the Millionaire trial is more disturbing than The Truman Show
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the trial of three people for deception in relation to the "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" TV show in the UK are examined. It is argued that the three people who attempted to cheat the makers of the TV show, Celador, out of the UKPd1 mil prize were merely involved in gamesmanship, not criminal fraud, and that they should not have been brought to trial.
