Quality monitoring makes VCs wary
Article Abstract:
Australian minister for higher education Peter Baldwin has released a White Paper, the intention being to allocate 29 million pounds sterling each year from 1994 on for a quality control and enhancement programme to reward those institutions making maximum use of their resources. He has asked the Higher Education Council to look at five specific points, including methods for monitoring and evaluating quality-related changes. Chairman of the Australian Vice Chancellor's Committee Ken McKinnon has denied suggestions that quality is lacking in Australian universities.

Australia competes on quality
Article Abstract:
Australia is monitoring the quality of its public universities and quality assurance is improving, according to the government. The ranking scheme gives more resources to universities which score well in terms of quality. Academics argue that universities which need funds to improve quality may be denied resources under the scheme. Australian vice-chancellors support the scheme and argue that prestige is as important as finance, with universities keen to secure a place among those which are ranked in the top band.

West plan gives fees freedom to v-cs
Article Abstract:
The West review of higher education in Australia calls for deregulation of higher education in Australia with greater autonomy for universities, and a voucher funding system. The plans include a life-long earning entitlement for all Australians. There are 38 recommendations in the report. The chairman of the committee is Roderick West, previously headmaster of a private school for boys. The inclusion of a number of conservatives in the committee meant that deregulation was a likely recommendation.
