Issues concerning the roles played by higher education establishments in causing social and political changes are discussed. Examples of academic actions determining political change are given, including the movement of Yugoslav students which forced Slobodan Milosevic out of power in 2000.

Issues concerning the role of students in advancing the liberal revolution in Morocco are discussed. Particular attention is given to comparisons between the beard-wearing, liberal, revolutionary Che Guevara and the lack of ideological involvement of the students of 2000.
