'Mixed economy' fate rests on faith in franchising
Article Abstract:
Some further education colleges are noticing a demand for higher education from students who do not wish to travel. They are responding by asking the Department for Education if they can take on the status of offering both further and higher education. To change their titles they have to offer at least 30% of their courses as higher education. This arrangement is due to demand, although the government wish to expand further education only at present.

Who made it into what and where
Article Abstract:
The increase in students entering higher education has continued over the 30 years since the Robbins report. From 1965-1975 university numbers doubled, and polytechnics increased by 50%. Entrants have mostly been from the higher social classes, due to less decline in numbers and social mobility. Female full-time entrants have increased, and women have contributed most to the numbers of students studying full-time.
