Innovate or atrophy

Article Abstract:

Academics in British universities need to take action in the face of growing competition from other sources of knowledge to dispel the Government's view of them as irrelevant and insular. Academic specialists tend to remain inside their institutions, cutting them off from the innovative ideas emerging from practitioners seeking solutions to real problems. Universities need to respond to growing competition from think-tanks and charity-funded research by collaborating with outside sources and becoming part of a wider knowledge economy.
