Invest in education and it will pay you back

Article Abstract:

The president of Dartmouth College, an Ivy League university in the United States, argues that adopting the Ivy League model could be a challenge that should be taken up by universities, students and society in the United Kingdom. It is argued that an Ivy League system offers academic excellence and allows its students to invest in an education that will serve both them as individuals and the society that will depend on them as individuals.

'The US admissions system would be considered corrupt in Britain, but it engineers social equality while educating the privileged in decency'

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the university admissions system in the United States and a comparison with the system used by universities in the United Kingdom. It is argued that the US system, which excludes academics from the process and aims for a balanced intake of students from all walks of life, is fairer than that operated in the UK and helps explain why the US has so many good, rich, educationally effective institutions.

Big Mother is watching you

Article Abstract:

In the past part of the move to university involved a young adult moving away from home and a loosening their ties with their parents. This is no longer the case as, in both the UK and US, parents are demanding a greater degree of involvement in their offspring's education and are increasingly making their presence felt, often causing difficulties for both student and university.
