Inviting independent incentives
Article Abstract:
The attraction of more students into independent higher education in the UK offers a partial solution to the financial crisis facing state-funded higher education, in that it releases places in the public sector for less affluent students. The quality of educational provision in the private sector is high, and courses are tailored to professional requirements, but the sector requires more capital investment if significant expansion is to occur. The government could facilitate this by allowing independent higher educational institutions the same exemption as universities from Value Added Tax.

Down and out by degrees
Article Abstract:
Article describes how going on to higher education can bring great financial hardship to families. During the three years in which her husband took a degree course, the author saw her family's financial position deteriorate steadily. At first, this meant only cutting back and managing the household carefully. As time went by however, the family was forced to frequent second-hand shops, cut back on meals, leave bills unpaid and do without medical or dental care. They relied heavily on support from family. They now feel as if gaining an education has been at some cost to their self-respect.
