Is the tune-in a switch-off?
Article Abstract:
Film-maker and university teacher Bob Mullan argues that Britain does not need a fifth terrestrial television channel because it will not lead to any real increase in programme variety. Lecturer in film Ian Christie points out that most of the programmes announced by the new Channel 5 are similar to those shown on existing channels. Institute of Education research officer Hannah Davies doubts whether children and young people need another channel. Lecturer in communications and mass media David Hutchinson would be delighted if Channel 5 confounded his expectations by being truly innovative.

Turkey with intellectual trimmings
Article Abstract:
Academics alive and dead featured among five academics' nominations for the ideal Christmas dinner guest. Reader in astronomy David Hughes named Edmond Halley, commenting that too many people would be offended if he picked a living academic. Professor of film studies Ian Christie regretted that his ideal guest, Jay Leyda, had been dead for about 10 years. Professor of politics Ben Pimlott would welcome a seasonal chat with J.K. Galbraith, but not over Christmas dinner. Professor of English literature Gillian Beer would invite ethnologist Clifford Geertz to a family Christmas dinner.

Out of African America
Article Abstract:
African American academic Richard Majors believes problems of racism can be solved by providing young black men with role models and encouraging them to attain higher goals. He believes black youth are not supported by academia but feels academic theories coulc be better applied to help solve their problems. He feels academics can empower people through the provision of information and he is critical of those academics who focus more on theory than practice. He aims to launch a mentoring system to support children and parents who suffer racist problems in school.
