Article Abstract:
Canadian political parties have been focusing on strategies for reducing unemployment in the run-up to the general election on Jun 2, 1997. For this reason, it has been hard for higher education campaigners to gain publicity for their concerns. The leading political parties agree that there are problems with higher education, especially in terms of reduced federal funding. They are generally looking to partnerships with the private sector and focusing funding on specific research programmes as ways of improving the funding of higher education.

More migratory Canadians are flying back home
Article Abstract:
For many years, Canadian scientists and academics have emigrated in large numbers to the United States, where the research and career opportunities were better and there was more money available. Canadian universities are beginning to fight back with programmes such as Canada Research Chairs, and the Canada Foundation for Innovation's financial support scheme.

Toronto blazes trail in giving guarantee to graduates

The University of Toronto in Canada is giving a guaranteed minimum level of C$12,000 in financial support to graduate students who are studying for doctoral degrees. Toronto is the first Canadian university to introduce this level of guaranteed support.
