Article Abstract:
A new database service CORDIS (Community Research and Development Service) was set up in Dec 1990 by the European Community (EC) to provide details on its research and development activities. The EC spends around 2.5 billion ECU (European Currency Units) on research each year. CORDIS consists of nine separate databases, Programmes, Projects, Publications, Results, Acronyms, Com-documents, Infopoints, Partners and News. Areas covered include information technology, industrial and materials technology, environment, life sciences, energy, management of intellectual, human and capital resources, mobility, education and training and regional development.

Since the mid-19th century, when freedom of the press was achieved, the media have been believed to be guarantors of democracy in their crusade to find the truth. Critics of the media believe that their integrity has been compromised by their association with, and absorption into, big business.

Issues concerning experiences of a summer vacation on the Barro Colorado Island in Panama are discussed. Particular attention is given to the location's regular visitors, including academics, and to the island's fauna and its research resources.
