Japanese universities warm to industry
Article Abstract:
Japanese businesses have traditionally had a negative image of the country's universities and many of its academics. In turn, universities have not needed to appeal to the business community for funding or other support. However, the links between the two sides are now becoming closer. Collaborative research programmes are being set up between universities and large companies, and new courses are aiming to respond appropriately to changing employment patterns.

Kenya's dying universities
Article Abstract:
It has become very common for students at the University of Nairobi to sell their textbooks and any equipment required for their studies to retailers in Nairobi who are unable to obtain these items. The university is suffering from a lack of funding, with buildings and facilities in need of repair. There is poor discipline among academic staff, and employers express doubts about the quality of teaching there.
