LSE sets secret state quota
Article Abstract:
Confidential advice for admission tutors at the London School of Economics (LSE) obtained under the Freedom of Information Act reveals that the LSE operates a quota for state school pupils. The advice reveals that the LSE sets aside 40 places/yr for students from poorly performing state schools. The discovery has raised fears among the independent school sector that top UK universities could have an admissions bias.

A public promise on pay that must be honoured
Article Abstract:
The general secretary of the Association of University Teachers lays out the reasons behind the failure of pay talks with university employers and the reasons why universities in the UK face widespread disruption as a result of industrial action. It is argued that industrial action can be avoided if the employers agree to fresh talks and to fulfil pledges that have been made on improving university salaries.
