Law flouted on contract staff
Article Abstract:
Short-term contracts remain 'endemic' in universities despite new European Union employment laws which come into effect on 10 July 2006 and which are intended to eradicate them, according to a survey by the Association of University Teachers (AUT). Some universities are deliberately trying to undermine the legislation through breaks in contracts so they do not have to offer permanent posts.

Cardiff and Glamorgan universities are setting up a Police Science Institute in Cardiff in collaboration with South Wales Police. The institute will offer everything from initial training to continuing development and applied research.

Islamic teaching to be scrutinised

The government has launched a review of the teaching of Islam in universities and colleges in order to stamp out extremism on campus. The review will be led by Ataullah Siddiqui, director of the Markfield Institute of Higher Education.
