Legal fear over degree plan
Article Abstract:
Higher education college heads have warned that government proposals to offer "time-limited" degree-awarding powers, that would be reviewed every six-years, to some institutions may be illegal and could result in students launching litigation. The Standing Conference of Principals noted in its response to the government's consultation document on the issue that, having consulted with lawyers, it has "very grave concerns about both the wisdom and equity" of introducing time-limited powers, and that the introduction of such powers could expose institutions to legal action from students and the Privy Council to judicial review.

Tackling a poor show
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the UK government's plans for the restructuring of higher education and the reaction these plans have received both inside and outside of parliament. It is argued that the government's plans to introduce UKPd3,000/yr university fees will only serve to discourage students from poorer families from going to university, as it tends to be people from poorer backgrounds who are the most resistant to incurring debt that can otherwise be avoided.
