Modern miracles by sort code
Article Abstract:
Research is seen by most people as something to be encouraged, but there is confusion as to what exactly research is, what its aims should be, and how much of what kind of research is needed. These are questions that cannot be answered easily, though policy makers need to be aware of constraints arising from lack of funds, which mean hard decisions have to be made over specialization, which in turn may preclude certain types of research from being carried out. Universities themselves are not necessarily the best bodies to make such decisions, which have impacts going beyond the academic world.

A college to call their own; a university can bring prosperity to a provincial town
Article Abstract:
It is argued that all provincial areas with populations of more than 100,000 should have higher education facilities. Many UK areas of this size do have such a facility, but it is argued that more are needed. As patterns of study change from full-time away from home to part-time near home more colleges will be needed. Financial pressures mean that many would-be students will be forced to attend a college near home or forgo the experience.
