More power to the ex-polys' elbows; momentous change for all sectors of higher education in the UK
Article Abstract:
The former polytechnics were awarded university status in Sept 1992. They now have the ability to award their own degrees, and those in other establishments. It is hoped they will be more attractive to overseas students, who will all be familiar with the name 'university' rather than 'polytechnic.' Many former polys have successfully set up work with outside bodies and are showing profits.

It's time to erase the malaise
Article Abstract:
A British educator believes that higher education in the UK has turned itself into a system plagued by problems with managerialism, bureaucracy, under-funding, and over-regulation. He feels that the only way out is for higher education to admit its own shortcomings and recognise the value of balancing academic freedom with commitment and responsibility to higher education institutions.
