Multi-ethnic labour pangs
Article Abstract:
The United Nations Mission in Kosovo is trying to bridge the gap between the two university systems in Kosovo. Prior to the war Albanians would not attend universities controlled by the Serbs. Following the war the Serbs do not attend universities because of the difficulty over language. Although the introduction of the English language into higher education may help both sides. The role of women as students and as teachers may be challenged. Some organisations, such as the British council, have been trying to help by contributing equipment. Students who want peace are often criticised.

Prepare for a shock
Article Abstract:
The university system is expensive to run due to the high cost of labour and it is often elitist, with obscure subjects being seen as having a high value. The universities may come under threat from the new companies which are using the Internet for distance learning. Learning via the Internet is likely to suit people who need to work whilst studying. Some observers suggest students will lack personal contact and will not have access to resources if they learn by the Internet. A number of firms have seen the potential for a distance learning operation which is open to everyone.
