The cash for references debate
Article Abstract:
A university professor discusses the number of times he is requested to act as a referee for past students. He questions the usefulness of the references he takes pains to write. He deplores the lack of information concerning whether his reference has been of any use to the student. The professor suggests he should make a charge for giving a reference. He often finds he is asked to make a judgement on a student's ability to fulfill a certain post without a accurate knowledge of the work involved. The professor can write up to ten references in each week.
