Navigate the circus of fancy with fact
Article Abstract:
The Leverhulme research professor of English literature at the University of Warwick argues that the study of English needs a dose of facts to release it from the free-for-all of critical "isms" that has dominated the subject since the 19702. It is acknowledged that the educational revolution of the 1960s and 1970s that added some colour to the study of English was needed, but that it has now gone too far in the other direction and that skills such as biography and editing need to be re-introduced.
