Network to transform the learning landscape
Article Abstract:
The agency Commonwealth of Learning is based in Vancouver, Canada, and its aim is to develop the Commonwealth of Nations' distance learning initiatives. Some 500,000 pounds sterling has been pledged by the UK government for the agency to investigate the use of learning technologies to improve literacy skills. The agency has trained around 700 distance educators over the past 10 years and has arranged alliances between Commonwealth partners to deliver degrees via distance education.

ACU tipped to take over fee-waiver programme
Article Abstract:
Research showing that the number of non-Commonwealth students studying abroad is greater than the number of Commonwealth students carrying out overseas studies have given rise to several new initiatives aimed at ensuring that partnerships between Commonwealth countries keep pace. The Association of Commonwealth Universities is expected to take over management of the fee-waiver programme, Commonwealth Universities and Study Abroad Consortium, launched in 1993.

Partners mapping the future
Article Abstract:
Higher education has played an important role in the development of the Commonwealth of Nations since it was formed around 50 years ago. The association is continuing to expand both geographically and conceptually, encompassing 54 countries and 1.7 billion people. Higher education continues to promote the Commonwealth's basic democratic values and to develop its future.
