The market is not the only measure
Article Abstract:
UK politicians talk of the importance of science but consistently fail to provide funding for scientific research for universities. Universities may benefit from the Mar 1998 Budget which lowered capital gains tax for long-term shareholders, as this could encourage academics into starting up businesses that could provide universities with revenue. The Government is providing 20 million pounds sterling towards a 50 million pounds sterling venture capital fund for universities, with charities funding the remainder. UK researchers have poorer working conditions and lower pay than elsewhere in Europe.

Caution could stifle scientific entrepreneurs
Article Abstract:
Scientific researchers and entrepreneurs may be adversely affected by the resignation of UK Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Mandelson. Mandelson's enthusiasm and political connections were of great benefit to those involved in science and technology who are now concerned that his successor, Stephen Byers, may be less enthusiastic and less proactive. Mandelson was keen to commercialize science research and the science community will lose opportunities if Byers proves too cautious.
