New boss ready to rattle Manchester
Article Abstract:
Alan Gilbert, who is due to take over as president of the newly expanded Manchester University on 01 October 2004, argues that the preoccupation with the introduction of variable tuition fees is actually a damaging distraction from a wider debate over the future of higher education in the UK. Gilbert, who has experience of education systems around the world, contends that universities in the UK have to change, and that they do not have a lot of time to do it if they are to continue to be competitive in the global market.

Debate is about to get personal
Article Abstract:
Opinion is divided about whether students require formal processes by which to plan their development or whether this approach constitutes hand-holding. The Higher Education Academy has organised a number of seminars nationwide which aim to explore how those charged with implementing personal development planning (PDP) for students can prove their work is worthwhile.
