New world budget cuts put classics on ice
Article Abstract:
Universities in Australia are rationalising their courses due to cuts in their budgets, and the classics are amongst the first course to suffer. Dean of arts at Melbourne University, Homer Le Grand, aimed to reduce time spent teaching classics, although after protests, Vice chancellor Alan Gilbert sought to postpone implementation of any changes until further discussions in 1997. The University of South Wales is planning to cut 26 courses and it is thought that the entire classics department at Monash University will be abolished due to falling enrolments.

Inquiry backs course fees for postgraduates
Article Abstract:
Australian universities plan to raise over 150 million pounds sterling in 1995 from charging fees to graduate students. The market for these courses has become deregulated and universities are free to increase charges. A loan scheme may be developed for students especially for those on vocational courses. Critics argue that fee-paying courses have been expanded too rapidly and quality has suffered as a result. Universities monitor their own standards and there is little support for a state body to monitor this.

British PhDs runners up in cost league
Article Abstract:
The cost of studying at UK universities is higher than at institutions in other countries except for New Zealand, according to a survey carried out by the Federal Education Department of Australia. There were 60 UK universities surveyed and fees were analysed to find the median. UK fees are high, and it is also expensive for Asian students to travel to the UK. Fees vary widely in Canada so it was difficult to calculate a median figure.
