Science blase on terror
Article Abstract:
Scientists in the UK are dismissing warnings about bio-weapons and are not considering potential terror threats that could result from their work, according to the results of a survey of over 600 life scientists at 26 universities which was presented at a meeting of international chemical weapons experts at Oxford University. The research indicates that the majority of academics believe that potential misuse is not a reason to restrict research and that terrorism is not their problem.

Publishers resist revolution
Article Abstract:
Journal publishers are fighting to discredit the idea that research results be made available free for all on the Internet after new research commissioned by the Wellcome Trust suggested that open-access publishing was an economically viable model. The move towards open-access publishing has, in part, been stimulated by the financial strains being felt by universities and a 200% increase in journal subscription costs over the past decade.

Stem-cell capitalists unnerve scientists
Article Abstract:
Sir Chris Evans, a venture capitalist, has criticised "defensive nay-sayers" from the scientific community who have raised concerns about plans put forward by Evans' foundation to rush research into stem-cell treatments into clinical trials. Critics of the plans fear that the rush to develop viable products could put patients at risk but Evans argues that they should be glad that he is bringing fresh investment into stem-cell research.
