North flaunts strengths
Article Abstract:
A group of eight research universities in the North of England are lobbying government ministers to challenge the supremacy of the research universities in the South East and improve their funding. Treasury officials are said to realise that it would be important to have powerful city regions elsewhere in England if there was to be a downturn in the economy of the South East, but Ian Lesley, pro vice-chancellor of Cambridge University, warns that diluting investment in universities across the whole of the country would be a bad idea.
