Now driven to destruction, our green and pleasant land
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the impact of economic historian W. G. Hoskins and his book "The Making of the English Landscape" and the changes that have been wrought on the English landscape in the 50 years since the book was written. Hoskins' work opened the eyes of historians to the ways in which history of an area could be discerned from the layout of the landscape. The cutting up of the landscape by the expansion of towns and cities and growth of the road network is destroying the landscapes that Hoskins loved.
