Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the agendas being pursued by western aid agencies in Afghanistan now that the Taliban has been removed from the region are examined. It is argued that what western aid agencies should be doing is accelerating the rate at which they are delivering the aid that has been promised to Afghanistan for reconstruction in order to enable Afghans to take control of their country as soon as is possible, rather than taking an overcautious, prolonged approach that envisages a greater say from the west in the running of the internal affairs of Afghanistan.

Article Abstract:

An examination of the origin and meaning of the word picnic and the claim that William Wordsworth may have invented the idea of picnicking as we know it today. It is argued that the idea of picnicking became a popular tradition in England in the late-19th century because it allowed the emerging bourgeoisie in the country to ritually reaffirm their link to the land and their community identity at a time when both were under threat from the new social conditions, providing a ritual that ensured an English identity against the threats of an industrialising world.
