Rewards helping the green to earn gold
Article Abstract:
The science strategy of the United Kingdom Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) has been published, and there will be increased support for basic research. There will also be more grant flexibility and some larger awards with a long-term duration. NERC science strategy head, Michael Schultz, argues that there are important links between environmental science and the economy. Interdisciplinary science is also seen as a key area, since innovative advances often occur where disciplines mesh.

Prince of the low seas
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom government and the Wellcome Trust have collaborated in the Joint Infrastructure Fund which replaces research equipment for universities, including Prince Madog. Prince Madog is a research ship to be replaced with Prince Madog 2 which will be well equipped to carry out research on shallow oceans. This type of research is important since the population of coastal areas is forecast to increase, and the shallow areas are an important source of fish and other resources.
