Nursery or bursary?
Article Abstract:
The government in the UK should invest more in education at preschool level and up if it wants to succeed in its efforts to widen access to higher education. It is suggested that the overwhelming weight of evidence indicates that social class has a major affect on school attainment, but that social class has no impact on participation in higher education once A-level grades are taken into account. Therefore, the best way to widen participation in higher education is to invest more in education at lower levels, thereby minimising the impact that social class has on students at the lower levels.

'Novel ideas remain largely the preserve of unorthodox individuals... people working outside the consensus and outside big organisations'
Article Abstract:
True innovation comes, largely, from individuals operating outside of the mainstream and without the pressures of large corporations. It is contended that large companies, while being extremely good at making incremental improvements to ideas, tend not to be very good at generating groundbreaking ideas. It is suggested that the growing trend towards uniform thinking in the education system combined with the increased bureaucratisation of academic science does not bode well for the future of research.
