Oil on troubled waters
Article Abstract:
The North Sea oil industry has made substantial contributions to Britain's economy. In 1990, Britain was the ninth biggest oil producer. Oil revenue is expected to be 1 billion pounds sterling in 1992. It employs 100,000 in Scotland, and provides 35% of jobs in Aberdeen. Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt universities have both contributed to research projects for the industry, as has Strathclyde University. At present safety is the prime research area, possibly followed by ecological projects.
