Outsiders are moving into pole position
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the growing power of the United Kingdom's 38 non-aligned universities, those that sit outside of bodies such as the Russell Group and the Coalition of Modern Universities, is made in the light of a new report written for vice-chancellors which reveals that they are good at access and many have strong research records. The report, "Patterns of Higher Education Institutions in the UK", is the third of its type produced by the strategy group of Universities UK. The report, which focuses on differentiation, also notes that there has been a general decline in the financial security of all institutions of higher education in the UK.
