Part-time lecturer wins pay equality

Susan Birch has successfully used the Part-Time Workers (Less Favourable Treatment) Regulations 2000 to challenge an employer over the difference in treatment between hourly-paid and full-time staff. Susan Birch took Leeds Metropolitan University to court after working more hours than her full-time colleagues but earning up to GBP10,000 less.

Sussex urged to reopen its race row case

Sussex University has been asked by Emiko Okoturo, black student who studied in Scotland and is now a campaigner on race issues, to reconsider the case of Geoffrey Sampson, professor of natural language computing at the university. Professor Sampson wrote an article in 2002 called 'There's nothing wrong with racism'.

Threat to dawdlers over fixed contracts

Universities could face costly employment tribunals unless they make more effort to comply with EU regulations on fixed-term contracts, the Association of University Teachers has warned. There is wide-spread concern among fixed-term staff that universities are not doing enough to switch staff to permanent contracts.
