Oddball heroes on the left-field of dreams
Article Abstract:
As the scientific community prepares to celebrate Einstein Year, the 100th anniversary of the publication of Albert Einstein's papers on relativity, Brownian motion and the photoelectric effect, the scientific community is urged to take mavericks and those operating on the fringes of science to their hearts, as they are likely to be the way forward. Einstein's initial rejection of the Big Bang theory for the creation of the universe is used as an example of how even great minds can make mistakes and reject maverick ideas.

'It's hard to imagine that anyone embarks on an academic career for financial reward, but additional income is likely to be welcome'
Article Abstract:
The MRC research professor in the faculty of life sciences at Manchester University argues that clear but flexible intellectual property rules are required to avoid exploitation and make sure that staff share in the spoils of their work and research. It is acknowledged that it is unlikely that financial reward is top of the list of reasons for somebody to embark on an academic career, but that additional financial reward for work done would be welcome.
