Rebels threaten merger
Article Abstract:
Members of the "parliament" of Manchester University are threatening to scupper the institution's planned UKPd285 mil merger with the University of Manchester Institute of Technology in protest against the new superuniversity's planned constitution. A letter has been sent by 15 members of Manchester University's 200-strong court calling on members to vote against the dissolution of the court unless something is done to address what they perceive as " very serious shortcomings" in the planned statutes and charter of the merged institution.

Power to the people
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the merger of the University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology are examined. It is argued that the merger of the two institutions should only go ahead if proposed new statutes, which it is contended are a threat to good governance and which will have serious implications for the management of universities in the UK, are dropped.
