Pros of the short term
Article Abstract:
Universities and academics can benefit from the introduction of fixed-term employment contracts, which allow universities to respond more quickly to the fluctuating external forces that affect course management. Universities benefit financially from offering flexible, short-term contracts to researchers or teaching staff on vocational courses. Employees on fixed-term contracts still have the right to seek compensation for unfair dismissal if they are sacked before the end of the contract term, while redundancy payments must be made if a contract of at least two years is terminated early.

Lifeline for those who missed the boat; the US crisis in medical care
Article Abstract:
The US is trying to look at a fairer system of health care, especially for the 13-15% of Americans who have no health insurance. A programme set up in Oregon offers a basic level of care to those who are below the defined poverty line. The plan works on the premise that there were 709 conditions, of which 587 would be treated even if the patient had no health insurance. It is expected that the US government working party on health, headed by Hillary Clinton, may take the Oregon experiment as a useful yardstick.
