Deconstructive dismissal
Article Abstract:
Literary theory teaching in the United Kingdom must undergo a radical change. Many academics agree that first-year English degree literary theory courses are unsuccessful in teaching students to develop new ways of understanding literature. Students often fail to understand why or how theory should be applied, partly because of the way it is taught without any apparent relation to the essays they are required to write. Theory is also difficult to define.

Article Abstract:
An analysis of the impact of the revolution in literary theory that took place in the 1960s and 1970s. It is argued that this revolution, which subordinated history tradition and art to a collection of thinkers and theoretical conceits, has now come to an end but that it has had such an influence that higher learning in the humanities is under threat.
