A land cursed by despots and warlords
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the threats that face Iraqi society in the aftermath of the capture of Saddam Hussein. It is suggested that there are two main issues that could cause problems in Iraq. The first is the threat of the return of an authoritarian centralised state that is unrepresentative of Iraqi society as a whole and which runs the country in a highly centralised, dictatorial manner. The other, opposing threat to Iraqi society is the rise of a number of provincial and local authorities, all jealous of each other and causing inter and intra-communal conflict.

Thriving right under Saddam's nose
Article Abstract:
In the aftermath of the United States invasion of Iraq, more is being learnt about the state of resistance to Saddam Hussein's regime within Iraq. Prior to the war Saddam's regime had been on the brink of collapse thanks to the growth of underground communities opposed to the Government's actions. These groups were able to grow as the Baathist regime began to crumble in much the same way the Communist regimes of Eastern Europe crumbled during the 1970s and 1980s.
