RAE triggers headhunt race

Universities in the United Kingdom are for the first time making use of the services of professional headhunters in order to fill positions such as faculty heads and research professorships. Previously these services had only been used to recruit vice-chancellors but as the market has become more competitive institutions are having to fight to secure the best people.

Key disciplines could face the axe in universities struggling financially if the government moves ahead with plans for a new metrics-based assessment of research, according to academics. The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) has sparked anxiety with the publication of five metrics models which could replace the RAE after 2008.
