Reel future. (Century of Cinema)
Article Abstract:
Sir David Puttnam believes that the early years of the Cinematographe film was perceived by its inventors to have a short lifespan and was something of a novelty. The early competition in the industry was cut throat and he believes the hold of commercial interests was only loosened with the making of The Birth of a Nation by D.W. Griffith in 1915, using film editing and the close up shot. There has been a transformation over the past 10 years, making a major impact on many industries such as tourism, fashion and music.

Tasty way ot kill off locusts
Article Abstract:
Dr Philip Newland of Cambridge University, is undertaking research, backed by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, into how the locust detects tastes and how its nervous systems processes the information. The research could lead to ways of reducing crop damage by insect pests, as many are becoming resistant to fast-acting insecticides. A possible solution could be the use of slower acting insecticides and it would be important to optimise their tastiness.
